You did some extensive touring through Europe and the United States in
2009, was there a standout moment?
Montreal Jazz Fest was great -- it was the first gig of the tour and the crowd
was awesome. Another one was in Holland, I forget the name of the town
right now but it was in a great outdoor amphitheatre. It was a beautiful night,
just on dusk, and a pearler crowd.
Recently you guys started recording your fifth studio album, April Uprising.
What was that process like?

tunes and it was in my studio which was a real luxury. There were no egos,
just everyone putting their best in to make the track shine. Nobody's sugges-
tions were more important that anyone else's. Whatever worked and sounded
the best was what we went with. We are all into the same sounds and grooves
musically, so finding a common vision was very easy.
How has your style evolved from previous albums?
I guess it's an ever-evolving process being an artist. There is a general spirit in
which I want to capture a group of songs, but at the end of the day we are just
servants of the song. That's the important thing. I guess my way of trying to
accomplish that keeps on changing, which is why each album has a different
If you could isolate one issue that deserves greater awareness in Australia at
the moment, what would it be?
I think the "Close the Gap" campaign demanding Indigenous health equality
is critical. It's a shame to think that one of the richest countries in the world
has a 20-year difference in life expectancy between its Indigenous and non-
Indigenous population. We can't even start to think we truly live in the land
of "a fair go for all" until we face up to this issue.
