As Scoop celebrates 50 editions, Parker & Co.'s
Victor Tana pops the cork for 50 years in luxury
menswear. Starting out as a delivery boy for the
distinguished gentlemen's outfitter at age 14, Vic-
tor fast became entrenched in the business and 25
years later took over as sole proprietor. We spoke
to Victor about his golden years in men's fashion.
What were men on the terrace wearing
In the early days it was all hand-tailored suits, pre-
dominantly English gentlemen's wear. And there
were lots of felt and panama hats around.
How has that evolved?
Today, made-to-measure is only a small part of our
business -- you can be fitted with a suit in the hour.
In terms of the classic end, I don't think it's
changed that much, although the fabrics are much
lighter and we've got more Italian designs on
And casual wear has come a long way too,
Yes in the 80s when everything was buzzing, men
were buying these luxurious suits for work, but
you couldn't get them out of their stubbies come
weekends. These days men want to wear nice,
stylish casual clothes, which is great.
What's the biggest mistake men make when
putting together an outfit?
Getting the shoes wrong. We see so many men
buying beautiful expensive suits and throwing it
all out with cheap or scuffed shoes. You have to get
the balance right.
Are the men of Perth a difficult mob to dress?
Not at all, actually -- they're very receptive. One
thing that has changed is the way men shop.
We're seeing lots of younger guys come in
with a pre-conceived idea of how they want to
look. Fifty years ago men would bring their wives

In with the old Sydney-based design company
2xO (that's "second time around" for those playing
at home) has taken the concept of cyclical fashion
quite literally, creating a neat range of streetwear
accessories from materials otherwise destined for
the scrap heap. Fire hoses, billboards, sails and
seat belts have all been given a new lease on life
as satchels, folios and wallets. And because each
product is made of at least 75 percent recycled
materials, you're guaranteed a one-off. 2xO is
in for the tick of approval. These days they're a
lot more confident about what they want.
Who's your favourite designer?
I like to wear Zegna Couture, Brioni and
Cucinelli. I think Brioni make the best suit in the
world -- it's timeless, completely hand-tailored and
the fabrics are beautiful.
