If you are looking for a reason to hop on the new
freeway and make the easy 1.5-hour trip to Bun-
bury, then Casellas Wine-Tapas-Grill is definitely it.
This classy establishment recently beat all big
city competitors and won Restaurant & Catering
Australia's prestigious "best themed restaurant in
Australia" award, with head chef Jay Marc Preito
wowing the judges with his clever, fresh and
fantastically different cuisine.
We called in early on a Friday evening and,
although there is an extensive modern Australian
al à carte menu to choose from, we couldn't go
past the tapas.
English translations make choosing from the
authentic Spanish selection a whole lot easier and
attentive, informed service means we were soon
sampling our frst morsel of croquetas ($8). These
corn and bacon croquettes, cooked in super hot,
good quality oil, ticked all the boxes -- crunchy
then melt in the mouth. Dip them in the orange
and saffron aioli -- it's velvety, it's mouthwatering,
it's pure fat and it's fantastic.
If you love anchovies, like I do, indulge in the
boquerones. Tiny, super fresh whole anchovies,
cured in lemon and a touch of olive oil. Pile them
on the excellent ciabatta bread, sit back, and just
Or try the albondigas. These little meatballs,
bound with egg, are topped with a spicy Spanish
tomato sauce. It's all cayenne pepper and paprika.
| Marlston Waterfront, Bunbury
Thinking great Spanish fare? Hold off on
the airfares to Madrid and head down the
new Bunbury highway instead...
Marinated octopus is fresh, creamy and has
been marinated for just the right time.
We tried the ubiquitous Jamón Serrano and
finally, a serve that lives up to our expectations.
Sliced thinly enough with that delectable sweet
after taste, it's excellent.
Strips of tender, buttery wagyu beef in a garlic,
mushroom sauce round off our meal. Finish off
with some manchego or valdenon cheese or
perhaps the amazing churros. It's all good.
Perched on the gorgeous Marlston waterfront,
overlooking Koombana Bay, Casellas is serving
fabulous food, at very reasonable prices.
A good wine list featuring a small, but decent,
European selection means that dropping in for a
drink and nibble is also a wonderful option.
