Jus Burgers | SUBIACO
Wrap your mouth around the great
offerings from this boutique burger bar.
Really enjoying a fantastic, big burger is a guilty
pleasure and, often, it is best done alone. A little
like finding Tony Abbott sexy.
No need really, for anyone else to see the juices
dripping down your chin, or the fact that, at times,
you may like to slip a few chips in between
the bread, right on top of the beetroot. Ahh
the joy! So you can imagine how happy
I was to hear that Jus Burgers, which has
been drawing the masses for about a year
in Leederville, had opened a little closer to
home in Subiaco.
Justin Bell opened up his new place near
the corner of Rokeby and Roberts Road,
opposite Wagamama, late last year and it
has proved an instant hit. It s casual, super-
friendly with booth-style seating inside and
an alfresco area outside.
Most importantly, the burgers are very, very
good. It s great to see that they promote and
embrace the "Buy West, Eat Best" program,
supporting WA suppliers and producers.
All burgers are made with thick white or whole-
meal Turkish buns and gluten-free is available as
well. Design your own burger or go for one of the
suggested combinations -- there s a huge selection.
All are served with lettuce, beef, tomato, Spanish
onion, relish and house-made aioli.
I opted for the cheeseburger (with cheddar, but
you can choose blue or Swiss if you like) and asked
for beetroot. For $5 extra, you can add chips or
salad and green tomato pickle and slaw.
Naturally, I had to upgrade and throw in a side
of onion rings for good measure.
Service is very good, with the kitchen handling
the crowds well. My burger arrived piping hot,
ith a big steak knife speared
hrough one half -- perfect for
olding that side still while you
evour the first half. Fries are
eshly cut and crunchy.
The onion rings, however,
ere rather soggy and one taste
as enough. However, the true
ar here was the burger. The beef
is top quality, 100 percent Harvey beef.
It s hormone-free and char-grilled so it has that
beautiful, open grill flavour.
Fillings are very generous with the lettuce crisp,
the tomatoes sweet and just the right amount of
very good relish and aioli, which don t overpower
the burger, as is often the case.
At $12, this burger is great value and, unlike
many sugar-and salt-loaded fast food varieties, you
actually feel good after eating it.
If you re after something different, there s the
wagyu beef with wasabi mayo ($14) or the deca-
dent Guvnor ($15) -- it s 270g and recommended
with foie gras ($6 extra). There are 100 percent
WA lamb burgers with mint chutney or tahini
yoghurt, Mount Barker free-range grilled chicken
burgers with garlic and herbs or perhaps mozza-
rella and pesto. Or try the skinny half n half -- an
open burger with salad, pickle and slaw.
Fish, boerwors, vegetarian chickpea or pump-
kin and even roo burgers round off a menu that
has something for everyone.
Kids are looked after, too, with the very popular
Grommit ($8), which is, basically, a perfectly
formed mini burger served with chips or fresh
salad and tomato sauce. For $2 more they get ice
cream as well. It s BYO and you can dine in or take
away. Either way, you ll be going back for more.
