HERE at Scoop, we care about our readers and have
done our best to ensure this doesn't happen. How? By
combing the mountain of upcoming music, theatre, art and
other miscellaneous events to find the very best of them --
worth traipsing through the rain for.
The City of Perth has done a fine job of collating their
Winter Arts Season, drawing together 25 organisations in a
program spanning three months. Among the highlights are
A Day in Pompeii, the ARTBAR series and Bell Shakespeare's
production of King Lear.
The Northbridge Piazza will also provide a new space for
film nights and visual arts exhibitions.
Soul music lovers will need to mark July 15 in their diary,
when five-time Grammy Award-winner Dionne Warwick will
be coming to town.
For classical music, there's an orchestra of options with
Richard Tognetti (pictured left) and Philip Glass among the
talented artists to feature with WASO.
Internationally acclaimed tenor Stuart Skelton will also
return to Australia, performing in the WA Opera's double-bill
production Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.
But one of the biggest stars to drop by Perth will be Sir
Ian McKellen, performing in Samuel Beckett's iconic play
Waiting For Godot. Read our interview with him on page 38.
Other must-see theatre events include MAMMA MIA!
and The Removalists, with the latter starring Jon English.
If all this still leaves you cold, maybe having a few laughs
will warm you up -- check out the Melbourne International
Comedy Festival Roadshow.
Of course, there will always be those who succumb to
the pleasures of thick woollen socks and days spent gazing
endlessly out of rain-streaked windows.
For the rest of you; be bold, arm yourself with an umbrella
and head into the exciting winter season.
For many, winter is an excuse to
stop shaving your legs (or indeed
your chin), drink lots of red wine
and curl into a ball in front of the
heater. It's no way to live a life...
