CEMETERY JUNCTION « Empire Mag gives it four
stars but Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant s latest col-
laboration -- a slightly rosy-hued nod to 60s Brit "kitchen sink"
dramas -- has got more of a warm pat on the back than rousing
applause. Gervais admits gilding the lily of his coming-of-age
drama with cool-looking actors and flattering lighting -- less
grit and more gloss than is normally found in a UK small town.
Why? Because he can.
INCEPTION « A heist movie with a difference. Christopher
Nolan (The Dark Knight) has been incubating this baby for an
eon and it may take you that long to work out what it s all about.
Think Matrix and Memento... yep it s a mind !@#$, literally,
as Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page enter the "vaults" of
information stored in people s dreams. It s a time, space, and globe-
hopping, boundary-pushing epic of a personal movie,
Nolan told the Los Angeles Times. That makes it that much clearer.
REPO MEN « Critics have not minced their words at the
sight of a buffed Jude Law who, with buddy Forest Whitaker, is
up to his pectorals in sliced meat, reclaiming artificial organs from
the saps who fall behind in their payments. The UK s News of the World calls
it a "day-ruining movie" and wonders whether the script could have been
penned by a gibbon. Other critics are less kind. Check out rottentomatoes.com.
THE EXPENDABLES « When Sly, Arnie, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce
Willis, Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin are brought together on a mission
in South America, you know you re not getting a moody thinkpiece. It s written
by, directed by and starring Sly Stallone, who broke his neck while filming a
particularly deep dialogue scene... no wait, it was a kick-ass action scene with guns,
knives and professional wrestling stars. Jean-Claude Van Damme said he turned
down a role because Sly could not explain his character s motivation. Luvvie!
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD « A Universal Pictures test
screening of Edgar Wright s (Hot Fuzz) adaptation of Bryan Lee O Malley s
comicbook series -- in which gormless geek poster boy Michael Cera portrays
the titled man-on-a mission -- reportedly yielded a one-word twitter:
nerdgasm. Say no more.
SALT « High-kicking, hair colour-changing action as the CIA s poutiest
spy ever, Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie), does a runner when a Russian defector
names her as a comrade. Aussie director Phillip Noyce says never mind the
adrenalin-packed "spi jinks", check out the emotional range!
JONAH HEX « Supernatural spaghetti western? Sure, why not. DC
Comics scarred, brooding, post-apocalyptic anti-hero Jonah (Josh Brolin)
rides into town to tangle with tart-with-a-heart (Megan Fox) and arch enemy
(John Malkovich), who is busy raising an army of the dead. Brolin
was quoted as saying the script was so bad, it could be good.
DEATH AT A FUNERAL « This US remake of the mildly
successful UK farcical black comedy gets the African-American
treatment with an all-star cast including Chris Rock, Danny
Glover, and Tracey Morgan. They ve upped the gross-out factor
and critics are calling it... "mildly successful".
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE « Vampire or
werewolf? Mortality or immortality? The choices you have to
make in high school these days! From the script: "Isabella Swan, I
promise to love you every moment of forever." (Can t fathom why
teenage girls like this -- can you?)
TOY STORY « Oscar-winning
Little Miss Sunshine writer
Michael Arndt was brought
on board to give Toy Story s
already beloved characters a
worthy enough vehicle.
Enjoy the ride -- just
pretend you re seeing it
because the kids want to.

Planet Sydney Science Fiction & Fantasy Film Festival including the uber-
cool sci-fi/western/musical Stingray Sam, in which gunslinger-turned-lounge-
singer Sam must rescue a kidnapped kiddie from a genetically engineered

style creation from a parallel universe went down a treat at the Sundance
Film Festival. The eclectic line-up also includes a mod coming-of-age

THE AGONY AND ECSTASY OF PHIL SPECTOR Phil Spector altered the
face of modern rock music, working with everyone from The Ramones to
The Ronettes and John Lennon. The legendary music producer gives a
rare, extensive interview in this 2007 documentary; an attempt to combat
murder allegations which threatened to overshadow his career at the time.
Spector was later convicted and sentenced to 19 years in prison. This is the
documentary's premiere in WA. FTI Cinema, Fremantle, June 14, fti.asn.au/
gives it four
