BALLROOM AND LATIN
If you d rather cling to a human being and prefer
slower moves, ballroom dancing could be for you.
According to Ryan Haworth of Gilkisons -- a
name synonymous with Perth s dancing scene since
1931 -- at least 70 percent of adult beginners arrive
at the city school alone and are easily paired with
someone -- who knows, you might even meet your
own Chesty Bonds-wearing dream partner.
Gilkisons specialises in social ballroom dancing
as well as a variety of Latin dances.
"Students learn steps as well as controlled
movements with leading and following between
each other during a dance," Ryan says.
"We build you with the knowledge of lots
of steps so when you get out on the dance floor
you can make your own routines from steps and
sequences you have learnt before."
Beginners learn the waltz, cha-cha-cha, slow
rhythm, jive, quickstep, rhumba and other popular
dances. An average class has up to 50 people.
"We ensure everyone moves at the same
pace," says Ryan, who says classes provide a fun
cardio workout, with your arms, legs, hips and
abdominals benefiting most.
You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in,
but you must be over the age of 18. "Come down
and be social, have fun, learn a lifetime skill and
get a workout, too," recommends Ryan.
