It takes more than one hand to pull all the strings at Spare Parts
Puppet Theatre. Their Company Associate Program includes around
40 artists, who all work on various projects throughout the year. “They
might be writing, designing, performing or facilitating workshops,”
says artistic director Philip Mitchell. “I think the key to it is collaboration.
Since puppetry is such a visual medium, we need lots of people working
together to create each show.”
What happens to the puppets after a production ends? They go to the
Puppet Museum, of course! Located in the foyer of the Spare Parts
Puppet Theatre in Fremantle, this collection includes about 800 motley
performers. “It’s kind of a cross-section of different shows,” says Philip
Mitchell. Among the masses are remnants from the Million Puppet Project,
part of the World Puppetry Festival hosted by Spare Parts in 2008. “There
were about 18,000 puppets which came from places like Africa, India,
England and Burma,” Philip says. “We try to keep changing our displays,
so there’s always something new to see.”
