Your show in Perth will feature songs from Eternal
Nightcap. How do you feel about playing a
concert dedicated to your breakthrough record?
We have fun doing it. We’ve already done it in every
other capital city and we actually did it with the
whole Sydney Symphony Orchestra last year as well,
so it’s just a fun bit of nostalgia. We do it from start
to finish and then we play some songs from the other
albums to finish off the night.
What memories does it bring back? It goes up and
down a lot more than a normal set list would so it’s
quite schizophrenic. It’s quite jolly in the first half and
then it gets sort of black in the second half, but that’s
to be expected because they really were songs that
had been written over a whole decade. They were
the songs I wrote about growing up in the inner city
in your 20s, and all the light and shade of that.
Do you have a favourite track you like to play
from the album? Let me cast my mind back... I
enjoy the challenge of doing Tangled Up in Blue, the
Bob Dylan song. Vocally it’s a challenge but when it
comes off it’s great. We do a good rock version of it.
This is the last tour for the band in a while –
what’s in store for you in the break? I’m putting
out a record under my own name next year, I’ll
probably work that with a different band for a while.
The Whitlams will play again, I’m just not sure when.
Can you give us a few more details about
your solo album? It’s going to be quite a cheery
affair and 70s influenced. That’s as far as I have got.
I’ve played songs with the rhythm section in the
rehearsal room but I haven’t started recording yet. I
hope it’ll be out by the middle of next year.
The Whitlams, Astor Theatre, September 17,
The Whitlams will return to Perth for one final show before the
band takes an extended break (note: not break-up). We catch up
with frontman Tim Freedman about his thoughts on the past and
plans for the future
