Causing a Rukus
Look out for the newest kid on the block from Toyota
– the Rukus. And you’ll probably notice them...
radical, boxy styling is the hallmark of the new niche
market car from the world’s biggest maker.
American-designed and sold there as a Scion,
it’s proved a hit stateside with young buyers. It
sits on a Corolla floorplan, but benefits from the
larger 2.4-litre Camry engine. It’s only available with
automatic transmission. On the road, performance,
roadholding and braking are more than adequate.
The unusual modern styling continues on the
inside but it’s a bit dull, all greys and black.
While all three versions already have keyless
go, stability control and six airbags, Toyota offers a
huge range of accessories to personalise the car. It
starts at $27,490 plus on-road costs, but the top of
the range at $31,790 plus on-road costs includes a
nine-speaker premium sound system, leather seats,
moon roof and dual-zone air-conditioning.
It might be an acquired taste, but for people
who’ve enjoyed the new Beetle, Chrysler PT Cruiser
and other stand-out-from-the-crowd cars, this could
just be your next car. For more information, go to
