Frock and awe
Ruler of the red carpet, beloved by the glitterati, debutantes, beauty queens and everyone in between,
you’d have to be living in a (distinctly unfabulous, crystal devoid) cave to have never heard of WA’s
original frockstar: Ruth Tar vydas. While she is responsible for Rebecca Twigley’s show-stopping
2004 Brownlow Medal presentation dress that left Ruth and Miss Twigley (and most of Miss Twigley’s
well-toned body) smack bang in the spotlight, Ruth has been around for a sight longer than that.
Launched in the 60s, Ruth Tarvydas was the first Australian label to export overseas, and the first to
be stocked at Selfridges in London in 1983. A constant force to be reckoned with, Ruth’s designs are
high octane and sexy – known for attracting the who’s who of Perth, as well as national and international
celebrities, such as pop sensation Rhianna and English rose Emma Watson.
Naturally, Ruth’s show at Perth Fashion Festival 2010 is bound to be a blast: it’s one of the most hotly
sought-after shows of the festival and is always a sell-out, so get your tickets asap. “Last year, we had such
an amazing response to our sold-out show that people were crowding at the entrances and our show this
year is ever hotter with never-before-seen concepts and the world exclusive of our new collection,” says
Ruth. “With the opening of our first Sydney flagship boutique this year, the brand is set to explode even
more and we are just thrilled to be able to give Perth this experience!” This is one show that promises to
pack a punch, with a spectacular opening sequence at the Perth Fashion Festival, a killer collection and
attracting Perth’s fanciest folk (Em Rusciano, Bree and Malcolm Day, Baz and Amy Zempilas, and any
other Perthonality you can shake a front-row g oodie bag at), as well as more super-secret surprises to
come. Scoop salutes this icon of the West Australian fashion scene and is a proud sponsor of her show.

Perth’s latest luxury fashion hub, Wesley Quarter,
plays host to some excellent international names:
Burberry, Emporio Armani and G-Star have all
made their home in the stunning redevelopment.
And with names like those, it’s no surprise they’re
flaunting it at PFF this year (and we’re getting
behind it as a sponsor).
My fairy floss-eating, lipstick-thieving inner
child is especially excited about the Alannah Hill
runway, which promises to be a candy-coloured,
lace- and pearl-adorned assault on the senses.
There will be no end of girly-chic from Alannah’s
gorgeous, 50s-inspired spring collection, where
she puts the ‘frill’ into ‘frillseeker’.
Perfectly paired with Alannah, jewels from Jan
Logan will open Wesley Quarter’s proceedings –
with 10 spring/summer looks that are premiering
in Perth. Expect to see plenty of sparkle: they’ve
got diamonds, jewels, South Sea pearls and plenty
of colourful semi-precious stones gleaming their
way down the runway.
The designer hub also has the Australian
debut of Coast London – a high-end brand set on
providing beautifully designed, quality garments
for special occasions. Aside from seeing a bunch
of well-tailored outfits in great fabrics under the
spotlight, the Coast runway is the perfect spot to
seek out your holiday frock. Wesley Quarter show,

MISS UNIVERSE-turned-model-turned-swimwear designer Jennifer Hawkins is jetting into Perth on September 11 to do an instore signing at Myer. Jen will also
be running fashion workshops, unveiling some of the hottest looks for this season. September 11, 12 .30 and 1.30, signing from 2pm, myer.com.au .
