PAN.OPTIKUM WILL LAUNCH THE PERTH INTERNATIONAL
ARTS FESTIVAL WITH A SPECTACULAR FREE SHOW.
The explosion of culture in our State that is the Perth
International Arts Festival couldn’t be better launched than
with Transition, a dazzling display of theatre, acrobatics,
pyrotechnics, film and music by Pan.Optikum, set to
transform the usually tranquil Supreme Court Gardens. The
company’s managing and creative director, Matthias Rettner,
says he hopes to convey the spirit of the festival in this event.
“Art really gives you the ability to touch people,” he says.
“So, with this opening show, we want to invite people to
an emotional response to the arts.”
While it’s an undeniably bright production, some darker
themes lie beneath the surface. It’s based on the play by
renowned Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad,
Le soleil ni la mort ne peuvent se regarder en face (Neither
the sun nor the death can be looked at steadily) – a mythical
tale that points to the fragility of the human condition.
“We’re looking at why people always try their best, but
often find themselves at war or fighting against each other,”
says Sigrun Fritsch, Pan.Optikum’s co-creative director. “In his
text, Wajdi describes how freedom lies within us; if we could
just realise the power to make changes within ourselves.”
More than 20 performers bring Transition to life, with one
lead actor conveying the narrative in English. “It is not like in
a theatre where some people work behind the stage,” says
Matthias. “All of our people must be performers because
they have to move objects through the public.”
“The crowd has to turn,” says Matthias. “Something is in
front of you, something is on the side of you and something
is behind you. If you want to see all that is happening, you
must move with the performers.”
It’s fortunate then that this free event offers standing room
only – be sure to pack light, so you can keep up with the
performers, and the show. Supreme Court Gardens, February 11.
