Barizzie on Flora Terrace opened about a year ago and is nicely filling a niche
in this part of the city. With a distinct Spanish flavour, the menu is awash with
different tapas plates and innovative, more substantial, racione.
I was expecting a dark, moody bar with black fit-out and plush chairs.
Instead, Barizzie is a casual dining space with unassuming tables and chairs
inside and out. But this is all about the food. And the food is fabulous.
Start with a glass of cava and the croquettes. Potato is seasoned with
thyme and mixed with smoked chicken. A hint of citrus g oes well with the
heady mancheg o cheese and it’s all lightly cr umbed and fried crispy brown.
Portobello mushrooms, ser ved in a thick, earthenware dish, are oven-baked
and topped with a creamy Greek cheese (a lot like a labneh) and relish.
You must try the chicken-liver parfait. Chef Michelle Stevens has produced
a truly outstanding parfait and the first I have found to rival Russell Blaikie’s
at Must. Silky, almost velvety, without bitterness (soaking the liver in milk
overnight removes that), it is teamed with smooth peppercorn jelly, the hints
of Pedro Ximinez giving it a wonderful kick. A standout with toasted brioche.
Simple-but-satisfying, were the Ortiz anchovies (quirkily ser ved straight from
the tin). Nothing like the overly salted creations on standard pizza, pile them
on the well-toasted bread rounds. They’re not cheap ($22), but worth it.
The lamb cutlets r ubbed in chermoula are succulent and plump, grilled and
ser ved with salsa verde – the freshness of the salsa balancing things out.
Churros were the only disappointment. I am a huge fan of these doughy
cigars, but these were overcooked and dry and the chocolate dipping sauce
was overbearing. However, don’t let that put you off. The wine list features,
among others, a g ood variety of European and Argentinian labels, sure to add
another dimension to your dining experience. Open Wednesday–Friday 4-11pm
and weekends 9am-11pm. 111b Flora Ter race, (08) 9246 7033.
