Scoop recommends reading by mature
audiences and those with a penchant for enjoying
outstanding West Australian plonk.
Anyone who’s digested any wine literature over
the past five-or-so years would have no doubt read
something about regionality and the importance of
terroir, the French notion of “sense of place”.
Panel members were reminded of the strength
of regional heroes when this tasting’s g old medal
winners were unmasked – all were varieties with a
proven affinity for the area that they came from.
Having said that, regionality and playing to local
strengths shouldn’t be reg arded as a constrictive
straitjacket, but rather a shiny uniform designed to
help keep things “on brand”.
Every organisation has room for rebels and
as the tasting indicated, there’s plenty of exciting
things happening in the state’s winemaking corners.
With the party season around the corner, there’ll
not only be plenty of excuses to visit your local
bottle shop (independent, we hope) for supplies,
but also to exercise a little courage of your own.
Specifically: say no to cheap-as-chups
Marlborough sav blanc and pick up a local SSB
or SBS. And while oysters and Champagne are a
match made in heaven, try swapping a few bottles
of NV for Great Southern riesling and see how
your molluscs – and wallet – like the local flavou r.
Scoop would like to thank Meg , Nicole and all the
smiling staff at The Geor ge for hosting the tasting.
