flavours through to the end with just the hint of partial
barrel fermentation giving the wine an extra twist.
2008 Shiraz, $35, 17.3
Here’s an opulent wine with ripe, generous fruit
flavours of plum and mulberry, together with oak
derived characters such as vanilla and nutmeg. The
tannins are silky and unobtrusive, providing gentle
support for the fruit. Winemaker Bob Cartwright has
unashamedly crafted a crowd pleaser with loads of
flavour and deftly handled oak
2007 Andrea Reserve Cabernet Merlot, $40, 17 .2
Beautifully balanced, long, rich and fresh, this is a
wine with fruit depth, palate length and excellent
oak integration. The warm 2007 vintage in Margaret
River shows its class here. Look out for this one.
2009 Chaffers Shiraz, $18, 17.1
Brown Hill Estate is a small family winery in Rosa
Brook, south east of Margaret River. The vineyards
are dry-grown on gravelly soils, resulting in small
yields. Despite this, the Bailey family continues to
produce excellent wines at less than $20 a bottle.
Aromas of plums and dark berry fruits follow through
to a medium-weight palate showing rich chocolate,
plums and cherries. The wine has intensity and
finishes with chewy, savoury tannins.

2010 Chardonnay, $22.50, 17
An atypical Margaret River style from south
of Cowaramup that shows a slightly grassy
bouquet, but overall, represents refinement
with very good fruit, length and balance. This wine
was well supported across the panel and was easily
the top 2010 chardonnay in its class. The sense
of elegance shows very good understanding of
the vineyard with winemaking to match. Should
open up with time.
2010 Sauvignon Blanc, $24, 17
A well crafted wine that is showing more gooseberry
flavours enhanced with some good quality oak
handling. Great complexity of flavour and very proud
and refined. A wonderful package that casts an
interesting light on what is a more modern style
FLYING FISH COVE
2009 Offshore Rosé, $15, 17
Bright pink in colour with vibrant fruit on nose
and palate. A touch of sweetness, yet the overall
package is balanced, fresh and fine with excellent
persistence. A delicious rosé for the months ahead,
especially at the price.
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, $40, 17
This is another cracker from the 2008 vintage
in Margaret River. Aromatic, berry fruits with a
structured, firm and persistent palate. A wine with
freshness, depth of flavour and years to go in a
2010 Rosé, $22, 17
Bright magenta-pink with floral, lifted aromas. A
delicious, flavoursome and enjoyable rosé with verve
and freshness for the warmer months ahead. Near
dry and sporting a persistent finish.
2008 Chardonnay, $40, 17
This Wilyabrup estate is making a name for
itself with its chardonnay following some great
versions over the last few years. This continues
the tradition with rich fruit, lemony oak and hints
of bottle development. The quality and balance
of the Gin Gin clone is evident and the oak
handling is also very good, as you’d expect from
winemaker Bob Cartwright.
2010 Semillon, $25, 17
This wine shows all those classic Margaret River
semillon characters – please, can we see more
producers having a crack at serious straight semillon
like this? Wow this is good stuff. Great power and
finesse with a perfectly matched acid balance. A fine
and minerally modern style that’ll also live in the
bottle for many years. Refreshing plus.
