Home' Scoop : Scoop 59 Autumn 2012 Contents Ashtanga yoga
WHAT An athletic, physically demanding yoga that
synchronises breathing with a continuous series of
postures that progress in difficulty.
PROS Ashtanga is a serious workout that raises
your body temperature and heart rate and burns
calories. Hence it can help you lose weight and
stay physically fit.
CONS It’s not for beginners and not for the faint-
hearted. If you want a relaxing yoga experience,
this is not for you. Also, Ashtanga is based on
two series of poses and you cannot move onto
the second lot until you are strong in the first, so
commitment is required.
CHECK OUT Sevenergy Yoga Centre, 244 South
Terrace, Fremantle 0408 951 565.
WHAT A demanding workout of 26 poses that is
practised in a room heated to 40.6 degrees Celsius.
PROS It’s a great cardiovascular workout and
causes you to sweat profusely, ridding your body
of toxins. It’s predictable, consisting of the same 26
poses every time.
CONS Because the poses are the same, there is no
variation. You have to be very self-motivated and
competitive; and if you’re feeling slightly under the
weather before class, forget it. More focus tends to
be on the lower body than upper body.

Beach, 19 Scarborough Beach Road,
Scarborough (08) 9341 6095.
WHAT A slow-paced stretching class incorporating
postures, breathing exercises and meditation.
PROS Hatha is a great place to start learning
basic poses and relaxation techniques. It’s non-
competitive, relaxing and gentle.
CONS For some, Hatha is too slow and meditative.
It’s not a high calorie-burner, so don’t expect to
lose masses of weight when practising it.
CHECK OUT Yogaworx, 12-16 Lochee Street,
Mosman Park 0439 999 760.
WHAT A school of Hatha yoga that focuses on
alignment. Students hold poses for a minute or
so then rest, before stretching into another. Props
including cushions, straps, wooden blocks and
harnesses are also used in this form of yoga.
PROS Has a physical therapy component and is
perfect for people with a physical ailment, the
elderly and disabled.
CONS The props involved in Iyengar yoga can
disturb the meditative aspect.
CHECK OUT North Perth Yoga Room, 5 Blake
Street, North Perth (08) 9444 9227.
WHAT A fast-paced and invigorating yoga in which
each posture is matched by one breath. Postures
are held briefly and classes flow with rhythm.
PROS Vinyasa builds aerobic endurance,
energises and enhances flexibility. It’s considered
to be a good cross-training system and can
transform the shape of the body.
CONS As with Ashtanga, Vinyasa is physically
vigorous. It requires determination and tends
to suit Type A personalities.
