ETHOS Rather than just a fast liver detox, it’s long
enough to repair the gut, alkalise the body and
restore zinc and other deficiencies.
THE EXPERIENCE I’m a bit battle weary by
the time I get here, but I talk myself around. Six
weeks may be just the commitment I need to really
make some lasting changes. They say it takes
21 days to break a habit. I’ll be at it for 42. And
whereas I start off sceptical about being plied with
pills and powders, I come to appreciate having
forces at work other than just diet and will power.
Naturopath Jacqui Lamplugh divides the detox
into three two-week blocks. The first is dedicated
to getting rid of the bad bacteria in the gut – which
a urine test shows I have in fairly predictable levels.
I’m prescribed tablets, and when I check in at the
end of two weeks, my test results are encouragingly
stellar. So far, so painless – except for the bits
where I want to punch something.
The second block is about putting the good
bacteria back, repairing the gut and cleansing the
kidneys. Jacqui says it’s her favourite phase of the
detox, and I wonder if that’s to ease the pain of the
powder she is about to prescribe. It’s an unnaturally
green mix of spirulina and glutamine and other
ingredients with only letters and numbers in their
name, and it’s a bit of a struggle to get down twice
a day. One of its powers is alkalising the body. I’m
encouraged to find at the end of this block that my
pH level has gone from 5 to 6.5 – apparently ideal.
Between blocks two and three I encounter a
glitch. A friend gets married in Canberra and I’m
swept up in three days of celebrations during which
resisting the Italian red and the wedding wheel (of
cheese) is futile. I plan to at least be moderate, but
my behaviour only appears that way when compared
with guests who’ve flown in from the Kimberley. I’m
disappointed, but also revved up; I tackle the final
two weeks (focus: liver) with unflagging virtue.
ON THE MENU Whatever you like, as long
as there’s no dairy, refined sugar, processed
foods, grains (other than brown rice or quinoa),
potatoes, pork, mince, deli meats, alcohol or
caffeine. Chicken and fish are good, and red
meat twice a week is fine.
RESULT It’s easier than expected; I manage
to make the back-to-basics food satisfying –
thank you, roasted sweet potato and barbecued
everything – and dropping booze and coffee is
rewarded by a much improved quality of sleep, and
with it an improved mood. My skin looks clearer –
until Canberragate when I go pale and puffy and
momentarily age five years – and even with the
gluttonous glitch and no effort towards exercise, I
lose nearly three kilograms. The much-anticipated
jump-out-of-your-skin moment doesn’t come –
perhaps I wasn’t toxic enough in the first place –
but I certainly feel healthy and clear-headed. More
than a few people tell me I look bright-eyed.
When it’s over Jacqui and I have a little chat
about wellness, and how to re-enter real life
without undoing all the good work. Now being
‘desperate’ for coffee or prosecco comes with
perspective. I feel like I have indeed broken some
habits. Although I relish drinking coffee again, I
don’t froth at the mouth if I choose to go without
(which I can). Ditto wine at the end of the day. I’m
no prosthelitising health nut, but I now drink lemon
juice in the mornings before my green smoothie,
and feel no compulsion to eat anything wildly
removed from its natural state. I don’t miss pasta
nearly as much as I thought; I may never again eat
potatoes. Chocolate? It’s got to be really good
quality to tempt me now. I have raw chocolate
fudge balls on my side. S
