Inject a little weird into your
wardrobe with these novel trends
1. CRUSTACEAN CRAZE
Is it a purse? Is it a prawn? It’s both!
This genius fusion of fashion and
seafood, courtesy of designer Larissa
Hadjio, makes for one of the coolest
accessories this season. But it’s not all
about shellfish. Elsewhere, we’ve spotted
a hedgehog-shaped coin purse by
designer Kate Spade.
2. PYJAMA PARTY
Look right at home, even when you’re
not. The current infatuation with
loungewear makes it OK to wear
pyjamas outside of the house
(admittedly, you’ll need to do a little
better than holey underwear and an
old t-shirt). Sass and Bide have shown
the way with this decadent sequined
pantsuit. Stick to a relaxed fit for
maximum comfort and cool factor.
3. COLOUR IN
Consider all your neutral clothing
dead. To stand out in a crowd, colour is
the obvious solution. Nobody’s going
to miss an outfit like this screaming
red ensemble by local outfit Flannel.
Whatever you wear, just make sure it’s
bright and/or boldly printed.
that of a wallflower : demure, neutral, fairly
unremarkable, but at the very least consistent.
Let’s just say I know my way around a pair of
black pants and ballet flats. These are sensible
pieces you can justify spending money on
because blah blah blah.
But the new wave of novelty wear has
turned my head. In recent seasons, we’ve
seen banana earrings at Prada, lampshade
frocks at Mary Katrantzou, and double
denim just about everywhere. Colour has
been dolloped onto garments with the
recklessness of a child’s finger painting,
and stirred through prints that are ser ved up
clashing. Even the queen of restraint, Phoebe
Philo, has come around, offering striped pyjamas
fit for a jailhouse.
I used to think buying these kind of directional
pieces was pointless – an expensive way to make
your wardrobe date fast. But the jumpsuit has
changed all that. Blessed with the maturity of a
grown-up onesie, I can see trends are in fact the
stuff fashion is made of. That moment when the
stars of the catwalk magically align, and something
once deemed awful suddenly becomes awesome.
That moment when, if you’re quick enough, you
can be among the clotheshorse whisperers who
understand designers, and the way colour and
silhouettes shift from one season to the next.
Of course everything in fashion dies
eventually – at the point of ubiquity when all
novelty is lost. That’s when you have to jump
off the trend before it is wrecked. At least I’ll be
dressed for the occasion. S
