Theobroma’s new chocolate lounges in Freo and
Karawara offer an indulgence in chocolatey hot
drinks, shakes, dips and more. A visit here is all
about extending the sensual experience from your
tastebuds to other tingly bits as you relax in a subtle,
chocolate-hued space filled with, um, chocolate.
Of particular note is the hot chocolate mug, served
with a little flame to keep it warm to the last drop.

Lapa Brazilian Barbecue in Subiaco is wowing us in so many ways. The menu offers dozens of
unpronouncable South American favourites, along with 14 different cuts of meat served a la carte or as
part of a set-price ‘endless feast’. Almost as exciting is the video screen that lets you watch the in-kitchen
dramas as they unfold nearby. Over the weekend, Lapa pumps out food way past most restaurateurs’
bedtimes. The booze list here offers a limited but worthwhile range of Argentinian and Spanish wines.

The opening of Clint Nolan’s La Cholita in
Northbridge (see Marina Fiore’s review on page
202) is the latest instalment in Perth’s ongoing love
affair with upbeat Mexican muncherias.
Three of Perth’s hottest culinary entrepreneurs have
teamed up to open El Publico opposite the Queens
Tavern in Mount Lawley. Michael Forde and Alex
Cuccovia (Cantina 663) and Paul Aron (Greenhouse)
have come up with a menu that features freshly
grown blue corn, tomatillo chillis and offal. Both pig
and ox tongue tacos are on the menu and the drink
of choice is mescal, imported from various areas
around Mexico. 511 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley.
Think upmarket Subway with a Mexican twist and
you’ve got Zambrero, where everything from the
guacamole to the chipotle sauce is made fresh on
the premises. Even better, for every dish purchased
Zambrero will provide a plate of food to someone
in need in the developing world (see plate4plate.
com). 663 Newcastle Street, Leederville and 625
Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, Zambrero.com.
Catering to northern ‘burbs burrito buffs is
Mad Mex at Hillarys Boat Harbour, which serves
the fast, healthy ‘Fresh Mex’ you’ll find in the
Mexican state of Baja California. You can even
get your burrito naked (sans wrap), plus a range
of Mexican beers and margaritas. Salud to that.
