Scoop’s autumn WA wine tasting uncovered some top
drops from the Blackwood Valley and Geographe...
t was g ood to see the lesser-known
regions achieving success in Scoop’s
autumn wine tasting. Geographe, which
sits immediately north of Margaret River,
continues to hint at what’s to come
in terms of quality. Two of its producers – St
Aidan in the Ferguson Valley and Barton Jones
(makers of the Blackboy Ridge Range) in nearby
Donnybrook – achieved high silvers. In addition,
one of the tasting’s top-scoring reds, the Barking
Owl shiraz viognier, was sourced from this region.
Abutting the inland boundary of Geographe,
the Blackwood Valley region also proved it can
produce wines of great finesse and depth. Our
tasting saw two Blackwood family wineries do
particularly well: Rosenthal achieved a high gold
and a silver, while Shedleys near Bridgetown
produced a silver-winning cabernet.

HOW WE TASTED
As usual, only WA wines were tasted at Scoop’s
quarterly wine tasting. Five panels, made up
of regional winemakers, industry experts and
wholesalers, blind-tasted their way through
more than 300 wines under show conditions.
Each panel then put forward its favourite wine
for a blind taste-off by judges to select Scoop’s
prestigious Judges’ Pick white and red wine.
Scoop would like to thank Wines of WA
General Manager Aymee Mastaglia and
her team for hosting the tasting. Check out
WWA’s ongoing programme of wine-related
courses and events at winewa.asn.au. A special
thank you to our band of willing volunteers,
led by head steward Joanne Bradbury.
